20201018 (6)_Masked_Shrike

It's not so long ago that Britain's first Masked Shrike was in the Kingdom of Fife but now the species has a bit of a track record and I took Marion to see this fifth bird. Like the others, it is a first winter with no mask and cryptically patterned: the adult is boldly black and white with a peach wash on the breast - stunning! This bird was catching insects along a hedgerow just West of Minnis Bay on the North Kent coast. Kudos to the finder of this often reticent bird, which spent much time sitting quietly and unobtrusively with only occasional sallies for food.
