This Hedgehog had curled into a defensive ball with sharp prickles extending in every direction, in the middle of the drive at our accommodation at Hillswick, Mainland Shetland. With Hedgehogs now scarce and difficult to find around my home in Farnborough I was keen to wait silently for it to relax. Eventually it did and began to trundle around on its foraging mission. It briefly began to curl again - its quiff of spikes can be seen here moved forward over its face - but then decided the flash was no threat.
