20201009 (12)_Blyths_Reed_Warbler

Blyth's Reed Warbler is a scarce bird in Britain, a Spring and Autumn migrant in small numbers. It is very similar to both Reed Warbler and Marsh Warbler, the identification requiring close observation of features such as the length of the emargination (narrowing of the feather tip for aerodynamic reasons, giving the impression of a notch in the folded wing) of primary no.3 (P3) which falls short of the tertial tips. Good views of the bird, which tends to skulk in reeds, weeds and bushes, are required, making it an exacting task for the finding birder. Exciting stuff!
