20201006 (11)_Pallases_Grasshopper_Warbler

The bird that made us take the ferry to Whalsay: a major rarity and very much a Shetland speciality with most of the British records being of birds found on the islands. They often skulk and this one began in the same fashion, but patience paid off and it began to make forays from a rose bed, running openly over the top of the tussocky wiry grass. Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler is known to birders as "PG Tips" due to the identifying feature of white tips to the tertials that cloak the flight feathers: views of this bird were good enough to show the legendary tips.
