Living inland means not seeing many rare birds on the local patch so when a relentless patch worker found a Short-toed Lark in a ploughed field just outside Shackleford in Surrey, only a few miles away, the team was in the car sharpish and rewarded with great views in the open of this pale, sandy-coloured denizen of Southern Europe and points East.
