First-summer wild-bred bird from the Alps reintroduction project, photographed aviating around the Peak District in the area of Howden Edge (specifically Abbey Brook).
The BOURC which governs accession to the British List is of the opinion that this population is not yet self-supporting: with which the Dutch rarities committee agrees. However, the project team itself believes the population is now self-supporting, and it is certainly both substantial and increasing at a seemingly favourable rate. Which may make the British Ecological Society's modelling of the population, which has resulted in them confirming that the project team's assessment is correct and the population has been self-sustaining since 2007, decisive.
Anyway, a fabulous bird to watch in British skies, even though the walk up and down taxed my post-lockdown unfit body to very near the limit!
