20191221 (27)_Black-throated_Thrush

Adult male foraging in the pig enclosure at Whipsnade Zoo, Bedfordshire. This is a true rarity in Britain, which breeds in the northern parts of the Far East and should be wintering in South-east Asia. While the routes individual rare birds follow to reach our shores are probably varied, the chances are that after an initial misdirection the bird attached itself to any passing flock of migrating thrushes rather than be exposed to additional predation risks from being alone, and then accompanied them (perhaps Redwings) on the rest of their journey to the UK.
