hallway

When I spent the night, I would always sleep in the front bedroom (to the left). The bathroom was across the hall to the right.

That hallway is *very* dark at night.

When sleeping anywhere other than their own bed, all little boys wake up in the middle of the night with an implacable and urgent need to go to the bathroom. And no, it can't wait until the morning. It's probably some kind of primal and avatistic instinct that comes from way back in the lizard brain... Get Up. See What's Going Bump In The Night. Mark Your Territory, etc....

That sort of thing... just one problem....

The bogey monster liked to lurk down at the end of the hall, by Myrtie and Fazzer's bedroom where it was especially dark. I could hear him down there, his hot breath rasping through his fangs while he licked his chops and drooled in anticipation... It was either that or just Fazzer snoring, but who's gonna take the chance?

The trick was to get from the doorway of the bedroom, across the hall and into the bathroom (turn on the light and shut the door!) before he could get you.

Of course, once the urge to go has been taken care of, you find yourself in quite the dilemma. You're in the bathroom with the lights on and the door shut. It is a near-certainty that the bogey monster has taken up station just outside the bathroom door. If he's not there, he will be found under the bed.

When you finally screw up the courage to fling open the door and dash across the hall, prudence demands that you cross the last few feet between the bedroom doorway and the bed completely airborne...
