The Valdostane breed of cattle is distinguished by its rustic appearance and dual production purpose: meat and milk. They are particularly agile cattle on mountain terrain, suited to difficult climates, resistant to illnesses, live long and breed easily.

The Valdostane dappled red breed, introduced in Valle d'Aosta by the Burgundians towards the end of the V century, boasts the production of much appreciated milk, if compared with the size of its specimens and the difficult, environmental breeding conditions. Fontina, the famous DOP cheese, is produced exclusively with milk from the Valdostane breed, which feed on forage and local herbs.
The other two breeds, the Valdostane dappled black and the chestnut cow breed, characterised by a vivacious and warlike temperament, lead them to fight in spring battles, to establish the hierarchy of the herd.
This natural habit among cattle, together with the passion of the breeders, led to the "Batailles de Reines" (Battle of Queens), cruelty free exhibitions held throughout the region. From spring to autumn, various rounds are organised, divided by weight category, which are viewed by the owners of the animals, as well as numerous fans and tourists who take advantage of a day outdoors to enjoy an usual spectacle. The victorious “Reines” from the heats met in October for the final, which takes place in the "Croix Noire" area in Aosta, surrounded by a huge audience. - - - - - - - - - - - -Le razze bovine valdostane si distinguono per la loro grande rusticità e per la duplice vocazione produttiva: carne e latte. Sono bovini particolarmente agili sul terreno montano, adatti ai climi difficili, resistenti alle malattie, longevi e prolifici.
La razza Valdostana Pezzata Rossa, introdotta in Valle d'Aosta dai Burgundi verso la fine del V secolo, vanta una produzione di latte apprezzabile, se rapportata alla taglia dei suoi esemplari e alle difficili condizioni ambientali d'allevamento. La Fontina, noto formaggio DOP, viene prodotta esclusivamente con latte di mucche di razza valdostana, nutrite con foraggi ed erbe locali.
Le altre due razze bovine della Valle d'Aosta, la Valdostana Pezzata Nera e la Castana, hanno un temperamento vivo e bellicoso, che le induce ad affrontarsi in combattimenti primaverili, per stabilire la gerarchia all'interno della mandria.
Quest’attitudine naturale delle bovine, insieme alla passione degli allevatori, ha dato origine alle Batailles de Reines (Battaglie delle Regine), manifestazioni incruente diffuse in tutta la Valle d'Aosta. Dalla primavera all’autunno sono organizzate le eliminatorie in tutta la regione, distinte per categorie di peso, cui assistono, oltre ai proprietari degli animali, anche numerosi appassionati e turisti, che approfittano di una giornata all'aria aperta per godere di uno spettacolo inusuale. Le Reines vincitrici delle selezioni si ritrovano ad ottobre per la finale regionale delle bataille de reines, che si svolge, con grande partecipazione di pubblico, all'arena della "Croix Noire" di Aosta.
