Hazen Pingree served as mayor of Detroit and governor of Michigan. In fact, for a time he held both offices simultaneously, until the state supreme court ruled this situation unconstitutional and vacated the office of mayor.
The Pingree Mausoleum is a Classical Revival structure with a four-columned portico. The column capitals are Corinthian. Sherman Depew was Pingree's son-in-law and is interred here with Pingree's daughter Frances. The Mills name refers to his daughter Mrs. Wilson Mills, also entombed here.
Pingree Street in Detroit is named after Hazen Pingree. There is also a memorial to Pingree at Grand Circus Park.
