White-breasted Nuthatch
White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) Despite the frequently occuring "rust stains" the description "white-breasted" applies to this tiny nuthatch migrating through California in Spring and Fall. Similar to woodpeckers, the nuthatches forage for insect and arachnids in the bark of trees. They are as comfortable upside down as not.
