INBAR: International Network for Bamboo and Rattan
SDG 12: Efficient use of natural resources
Input to SDG 12: Efficient use of natural resources
Bamboo poles, fibre and engineered bamboo can be used for most purposes where timber is used. Bamboo is a ‘woody grass,’ not a tree, and is selectively harvested without harming the ecosystem, or contributing to deforestation. INBAR is working closely with the International Standards Organization to promote the development of international standards for bamboo and rattan production; and is in contact with the relevant certification bodies about the need to ensure sustainable production and management of bamboo and rattan.
INBAR recommendation: Countries in the Global South should consider using bamboo instead of tropical hard-wood or imported soft-wood, and list bamboo and rattan products in governmental procurement specifications.
