Splendid and grand construction of Elvas Square situated in a great elevation to the north. A notable example of military architecture of the century. XVIII and considered by many historians as one of the most powerful bulwark fortresses in the world , the Forte da Graça or Lippe is still unique in its design and implementation . In fact this increase has always been very important . Still in the century. XV here stood the little chapel of Santa Maria da Graça whose rebuilding at the time was due to the great-grandmother of Vasco da Gama. By the time of the Restoration War, in 1658 the Spanish built a stronghold here in the moth Juan Zuñiga to attack the city of Elvas.

The building of the fortification would begin in 1763 by Wilhelm , Count of Schaumbourg -Lippe , commissioned by King Joseph to reorganize the Portuguese army. To direct the great works was chosen the Ettiene Engineer , which is soon after replaced by Colonel Guillaume Louis Antoine de Valleré . The gigantic works only end in 1792. In 1763 , for example, worked in that building 6000 men and 4000 beasts , depleting almost the resources of the city.

Consists of three bodies : the external works , the main body and the central stronghold is an example of military architecture of Vauban type. The central body is formed by four bastions with the middle of the south curtain the front door of a phenomenal beauty.
