Customized Black 1988 Golf

It looks like a fully decked-out GTI, but it's actually a standard second-generation Golf, customized with mag wheels and a mildly redone interior.

 

Note too the accented door handle.

 

This is likely one of the last Golfs to leave the Westmoreland County plant in Pennsylvania, which closed on July 14, 1988, as Americans shied away from hatchbacks and as European carmakers were increasingly ceding the entry-level market in the U.S. to Asian competitors and concentrating more on luxury cars. Volkswagen would survive both changes in the American car market, but not without difficulty.
