New York Auto Show, 2010 - Chevrolet Volt

Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and an electric motor.

The Chevrolet Volt, which goes on sale in the fall of 2010, is to be powered by lithium-ion batteries that can be charged directly from an electrical power outlet. This is enough power for a round-trip commute of up to forty miles, thus satisfying the commuting needs of three out of four Americans.

Many transportation buffs, me included, think an even better idea for electrically powered transport would be to rebuild the old American electric streetcar lines decimated in the 1950s, but remember, this was an auto show, not a public transit festival.

The Volt is expected to be really expensive for a couple of years and General Motors is not expected to break even immediately, hence there'll also be a Cadillac coupe (shown on the 2009 auto show circuit as a concept vehicle). But the Volt (also to be sold in Europe as the Opel Ampera and in Britain as a Vauxhall) shows a clear leap forward in GM's thinking ahead of rival Toyota.

Speaking of which, they haven’t been doing too well lately.
