1969 Lincoln Continental Mark III

This beautiful car was Lincoln-Mercury's entry into the luxury coupe market in the late sixties, specifically to compete against Cadillac's Eldorado, which in 1967 had gone front-wheel-drive. Lee Iaccoca, then a Ford executive, based it on the Thunderbird to use up excess assembly line capacity.

The Continental Mark III was a mass-produced sequel to the exclusive Mark II coupe of the mid-fifties (which I photographed a copy of earlier). It had a stately Rolls-Royce-style front end with covered headlights and a spare tire bulge, which was actually cosmetic, and featured a 7.5-liter V8. The interior featured English oak and rosewood trim with optional leather seating. The base price was $6500, $1500 above a '68 Thunderbird.

This immaculate 1969 model was parked in a Caldwell, New Jersey used car lot. A halo car for a used car business if there ever was one, this.
