New York Auto Show, 2014 - Chevrolet SS Sedan
The heartbeat of America gets its pave quickened from down Under. First shown at the 2013 new York Auto Show, the Australian-built 2014 Chevrolet SS is now available in Chevy showrooms.
A sport version of the Holden Commodore and built outside Adelaide in the state of South Australia, the SS has gotten some mild criticism for its dated styling. But as Han Solo would say, she may not look like much but she's got it where it counts - 415 horses, with one pound-foot of torque for each of them, and a 0-60 time of four and a half seconds.
Like the Corvette, the SS is a halo car that has little in common with the rest of the Apple Pie Division's lineup. But even if it did sell in the same volume as a Malibu (at about $43,000, it most certainly will not!), its time on the showroom floor isn't going to be long. General Motors has announced that it is phasing out its manufacturing base in Australia by 2017. The only Holdens you'll be able to but after that will be made elsewhere. This is happening along with manufacturing pullouts form Oz by Ford and Toyota. There isn't going to be an Australian car industry left.
Retreat, Australia fair. :-(
