Came across this small bull on the mushing trail at Creamer's. He still has one antler from last year that will drop soon.
This time of year moose are getting very hungry. They eat 50 lbs or more of browse a day during the summer that has lots of nutrition. However in winter the trees and bushes shut down and the browse is not nearly as nutritious as it is in summer, so the last good meal was back in September. With heavy snow years like this one this time of year they are reluctant to give up a trail to walk in the deep snow that burns a lot more fuel. This little guy walked me back down the trail a half a mile or so until the trail had an intersection so I could get out of his way. Going off the trail into 4' deep snow wasn't an option as I'd only been able to get a few feet off the trail. But he wasn't aggressive so all ended well.
