So far this year has been very warm here in Fairbanks. For the last two weeks we've been seeing temperatures in the 30's F and even 40's F which contrasts with averages for this time of year that indicate lows of -20F and highs of -2F. It has been caused by a strong southerly flow that when it hits the Alaska Range causes a mountain wave and downsloping winds that are warmed by compression as the come into the lower atmospheric pressures.

Another effect of the down sloping winds are the high cloud formations that make for dramatic sunrises and sunsets. This morning is especially nice.
