JFK's Ann Arbor Whistlestop, October 14, 1960 -- 3

Governor Williams speaks, as Governor-to-be Swainson looks back into car to see Kennedy emerging. (Man at left is another press photographer.)

(Gerhard Mennen "Soapy" Williams, heir to the Mennen-Williams toiletries fortune, served six consecutive two-year terms (1949-61) as Governor of Michigan. In 1960 he had decided to retire, and was not seeking re-election. President Kennedy named him Undersecretary of State for African Affairs; while serving in that post, Williams stirred up a controversy by coining the anti-imperialist slogan "Africa for the Africans." Williams later served on the Michigan Supreme Court.)
