In Memoriam: Wystan
Funeral procession of U-M President Marion L. Burton, South University Avenue, Feb. 21, 1925.
The procession turns left from South University onto Church Street, on its way to Forest Hill Cemetery. This photo, from the album of a U-M student, looks west past some of the early commercial buildings on South "U". At right, just beyond the spare tire of a turning vehicle, we glimpse the face and tripod rig of a newsreel cameraman. A headline in the Ann Arbor paper that day read: "Human Walls Line Streets." Most of the male bystanders have doffed their hats in a gesture of respect, but at least one clueless gawker has not.
The Burton Memorial Tower on campus was erected in tribute to the memory of President Burton.
