State Street and North University in 1957 -- chrome postcard by Haight
Looking west on North U, from Thayer to State Street. The 1940 Kresge's building on the corner is now the location of the Nebraska Book Company's local outlet, Michigan Book & Supply. (Nebraska Book also owns Ulrich's Bookstore, on East University.) Kresge's building was erected on the former site of J.J. Quarry's drugstore; when that building was torn down, the drugstore moved across State Street and, under new ownership, became "The Quarry." In the 1950s The Quarry took over an adjoining storefront, which became a camera store called Quarry Photo. The wall between the two stores was opened up to link the operations.
In this photo, the Quarry stores are visible in the distance, next to the double storefront of Follett's Michigan Bookstore, which was part of a small (non-local) chain that also had stores on other college campuses. The Follett's location earlier had been Sheehan's bookstore, and Graham's, and now houses the Espresso Royale cafe. When The Quarry went out of business, the pharmacy side was taken over by Decker Drugs, and the photo operation became Ritz Camera, which lasted at this location until June, 2009. An outlet of the 7-11 chain opened there in 2011. Decker Drugs closed several years ago, and the drugstore location is now occupied by a restaurant called Noodles & Co.
