April 20, 1849, letter from Ann Arbor to Thomas Nye, Esq., in Montreal, Canada.

AN UNSIGNED, STAMPLESS LETTER FROM ANN ARBOR, IN THE YEAR OF THE CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH: April 20, 1849 -- To Thomas Nye, Esq., Counselor at Law, Montreal, Canada. "Dear Sir: I have been spending the Winter in this Pleasant Village of Ann Arbor, and we have had a pleasant winter for this country in consequence of having very excellent Slaying [sic] for about 3 months, from the first of Jany. untill about the first of March. The Winter has been uncommonly cold for this country. The snow has been but 10 or 12 inches deep, we don't compare with Canada for depth of snow, much less with the California mountains, where according to Col. Fremont's account, the snow fell on his party 30 feet deep, burying and destroying all of his mules, with a Number of his party. The gold fever will destroy many more, it is to be feared. . . . ." ----part of a letter (the rest dealing briefly with legal matters) now for sale in an eBay auction.
