On November 15, 1996, Ellis Wayne Felkner was executed by electrocution in Georgia at the age of 48. Felkner was a suspect in the 1981 disappearance of Georgia woman Evelyn Joy Ludlum. While put on under 2 week police surveillance, Ludlum’s raped, stabbed and murdered body was found in a creek; an autopsy found that she had been dead for five days. However, this information was later changed after realizing this would eliminate Felkner as a suspect. In 1996, boxes of evidence were discovered by Felkner’s attorneys that had been unlawfully withheld by the prosecution, including DNA evidence and a written confession by another suspect. Felkner was denied a new trial by the Georgia Supreme court. Felkner has been presumed innocent. Did he deserve to die?
