Zomergem VI

History of Zomergem a village on 15 km from Ghent

The first settlement begins with the Christianization of Saint Amand in the 7th century when the witnesses hill where the church now stands was built a chapel or church. Zomergem was a primitive parish whose patronage in 1171 by the bishop was donated to the chapter of Tournai.

 

The oldest data about the lords of Zomergem, as owners of the same glory back to 11th century. Since the 13th century the manor was owned by several families, including Martin Snouckaert, lord of Zomergem in 1642.

 

Apart from the traditional diffuse agricultural industries Zomergem had no remarkable industrialization. Zomergem acquired since the beginning of the 20th century fame with flowers, especially azaleas culture. The bombing targeted the building material injury within the municipality during the First World War.
