κωμασταί - Dancing men

The painting of this kantharos is arranged in two parallele strips; the lower shows two crouching sphinxes facing each other, flanked by lions; the upper six dancers and a flute player. All are naked and bearded. They are engaged in a ritualistic drunken procession, κῶμος, they are κωμασταί.
