Limes Arabicus: Resafa XXIII, St Sergius

The martyrdom in 305, during the Great Persecution under Diocletian, of Sergius, a Christian officer in the Roman army, brought Rasafa into prominence. Indeed, as from the 4th century, Sergius’ martyr-shire (Martyrion), built in Resafa, became a pilgrimage center for Christians. The city became the most important pilgrimage center in the Byzantine Orient and its name was changed from Resafa to Sergiopolis.

The Cathedral of St Sergius, one of the most impressive churches in Syria was built in the half of the sixth century by bishop Abraham. In the recent time, the Church changed name and, according to an epigraphic inscription found by German archeologists in the 1977, it was renamed as “Holy Cross Cathedral”.

The photo shows the large ecclesiastic complex composite by a basilica, a monastery and a pilgrim's hostel. The building is located in the south-east city.
