Limes Arabicus XXVIII: Resafa, St Sergius
St. Sergius’ Cathedral has the typical rectangular plan. The dimensions are 31 meters long by 20 meters large. The interior is divided in three naves. The central is eparated from the others lateral by "tutto tondo" arcades supported by columns and pillars with a cruciform plan. The light enters inside the basilica through windows opened in the walls in correspondence of the arcades.
An apse framed by two pillars closes the main nave. A typical Syrian "bema" (raised platform) is located in the middle of this nave and takes up the surface between the two central pillars. Half-circle steps and an episcopal throne are arranged along the apse.
Two rectangular well-preserved chapels end the lateral naves.
