Lucius Verus - I
This sculpted head depicts the Roman emperor who ruled jointly with his adoptive brother Marcus Aurelius from AD 161 to 169. Framed by wavy hair and a thick beard, the face conveys intense pathos and a striking sense of human vulnerability. It recalls the emperor’s death on the road between Aquileia and Altinum while returning from military campaigns against the Marcomanni and the Quadi.
