Cumae Tomb Gabrici VI, Protocorinthian Lekythos - I

This proto-corinthian lekythos exhibits a conical body with the rare decoration of grazing deers. This vase was recovered together with numerous proto-corinthian aryballoi - ointment jars - in the northern necropolis of Cumae, tomb Gabrici VI.

The vase has a trilobate mouth with a tricorn lid, a high cylindrical neck, a conical body with a flat base, and a ribbon handle.

Concentric lines are painted on the lid. Groups of four horizontal lines divide the neck of the lekythos in three registers decorated with geometric motifs: upper register, chain of oblique "S"; middle register, series of staggered vertical lines alternating with dots lines; lower register, series of oblique segments. On the shoulder, a serpent with a triangular head and a sinuous body surrounded by dots and quadripartite lozenges with dots inside each compartment; below, groups of "S" between pairs of lines.

On the body, a frieze with the rare representation of grazing deers.
