Youths and Monsters
On the left, an lonic column supporting a sphinx which leans towards a youth sitting on a block facing her. The youth is wrapped in a himation drawn over his head. The wing of the sphinx overlaps with the lip of the vase and reaches its rim. On the right a youth riding a horse. He is naked and holds a spear. Behind him, by the handle, a bird flies to the right. Under the handle, a goat. The himation over the youth's head may be read as a symbol of fear or mourning .
This skyphos is attributed by Beazley to The Theseus Painter. According to other scholars it should be attributed to The Philadelphia Painter.
