Herakles’ 6th Labor: The Stymphalian birds - “The Colors of the Etruscans” - I - The Recovered Artworks XXVII – Mythological Issues
Vase returned from Boston Fine Arts Museum in 2006 and decorated with scenes of Heracles vs. the Stymphalian Beards (labor no. VI)
The decoration of this with-ground lekythos is centered on the two figures of Hercules and lolaus fighting against the carnivorous marsh birds of Stymphalia, in northern Arcadia. The hero is recognizable by the lion' skin (Ieonté) and by the club, his typical weapon, resting on the ground while the hero is attacking the birds with the bow; Iolaus, wearing helmet and armor, is using a sling instead. On the white background among the characters there's a series of meaningless pseudo-inscriptions. Th epiece can be attributed to the
Painter of Diosphos, active in thefirst twenty years of the fifth century BC, whose main production consists of lekythoi and alabastra with a white background.
