Piraeus Apollo - VI

The body of the Piraeus Apollo is modeled in accordance with the principles for marble sculptures of kouroi produced at the beginning of the last quarter of the sixth century B.C. Smooth rounded shoulder blades protrude behind high, broad pectoral muscles. The long massive hair, reminiscent of that of the Agora Apollo, falls onto the upper back in separate strands, simple beaded tresses ending in points. From the side, the spinal column can be seen to make an S-curve down the back. The nipples are incised. The rectus abdominus, marked by a central vertical depression, is modeled with two transverse divisions above the waist. The hips are horizontal and the pubes curve simply upward. Both feet rest flat on the ground, and, unexpectedly, the right foot instead of the left one is advanced.
