Namib horses at Garub
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namib_Desert_Horse
its heartbreaking to find these horses. Left after WW1, their living conditions are cruel, their herd size is down to under 100 (from about 250) due to extremely dry conditions in the past years. We saw no foals, according to some reports, they have not survived. If their numbers drop below 50, they will not be able to maintain their gene pool.
Though the horses have adapted to these extreme living conditions, traveling up to 40 km to reach the only waterhole, and being able to go without water for 2-3 days, there is almost nothing to feed on. Rain is desperately needed!!!!
