Away Again

It seems as though travelling abroad has been even more difficult in 2021 than in 2020. Nevertheless, myself and three others managed to escape the UK for a two week trip taking in Austria, Hungary and Slovakia at the end of October/beginning of November. This had originally planned to be a long trip to India, but with their borders still closed the possibility of the USA was looked at. This too was also a no-go for the dates we had so an itinerary taking in parts of Europe that we had wanted to tick off was cobbled together. We had held off booking until the last possible moment to avoid a Covid bowl out which was just as well since we had originally planned to cover Romania, but with case numbers there shooting up the week prior and restrictions once again being introduced we shelved this idea. With around 48 hours notice we booked a Sunday afternoon flight to Vienna where the weather forecast was reasonable and we could pick up the planned itinary.

Despite one of our group losing and then regaining his luggage on the way to the airport and a farce involving certain types of masks required in Austria we successfully made it to Vienna late on the Sunday evening. Our first port of call was a couple of days on the Semmeringbahn and fortunately our first afternoon was blessed with some glorious autumnal sunshine. EC151 hauled by 1144.116 delivered us to Semmering and after dumping our luggage at our accommodation we made our back down the valley to Breitenstein. Following an increadibly difficult climb from the footpath below, ÖBB 1144 class no. 1144.261 is seen crossing the Krausel-Klause viaduct with EC158 06:45 Zagreb to Vienna service on 25th October 2021.
