Our Miracle

365: The 2015 Edition (200/365)

DDC "Over the Top"

On Friday, R came within inches of losing his life. Somehow, a neurotoxin got into his system, rendering him almost comatose and giving him numerous seizures. We took him to the local emergency vet who almost immediately decided that his case was out of their league. They put him in a pet ambulance - which I never knew existed - and sped him to the Colorado State Vet School where they had ventilators and other high tech stuff in their critical care unit.

Sometime around midnight on Friday, he started to pull out of the death spiral he was in. By Saturday early morning, the seizures stopped and he was cognizant of his surroundings. To our utter surprise, he could walk normally by Saturday at noon so he got to come home.

He has been sleeping deeply ever since he arrived home. We will see our regular vet and specialists in the coming days. We are told that some toxins attack the nervous system first and then the liver/kidneys days later. So far, we don't see signs of that second phase but blood will be drawn tomorrow to check.

This fits DDC's cue "Over the Top" because his plummet and then his turnaround were most certainly "over the top".

I managed to keep it together during the entire crisis. As soon as he was home, I got a migraine aura and then a bad migraine. That was not too surprising, in my opinion, since much smaller things have triggered my migraines in the past.

I awakened him for this photo today. I was overjoyed to see the sparkle in his eyes.
