Shyla had myriad fears when I first met her. She's come a huge way in learning to stand tall in our world. However, she is still afraid of off-leash dogs on the trails. Her favorite strategy is to hide when she hears them coming. Often, the person with the dogs doesn't even know that Shyla is nearby watching us, waiting for the scary dogs to leave. One of her favorite hiding strategies is to stand perfectly still behind a pine tree, just like in this photo.

 

I wish that she weren't afraid of off-leash dogs because most of them are playful and fun. However, I think this isn't a bad coping strategy.
