Ai Weiwei is a Chinese artist and activist. He has been imprisoned for speaking out in China. He is currently (as of Aug 2014) not allowed to leave the country.
The At Large exhibition of new art works by Ai Weiwei addresses the situation of people around the world who have been deprived of their freedom for speaking out about their beliefs. This exhibition was specifically designed to be displayed in Alcatraz and builds on its history as a prison and a place of activism.
The building in the background is the industrial building where inmates worked to manufacture things.
