Early Retirement
I saw this stove on the side of the road one day several years ago. I dashed home and had my then nine year old daughter block traffic while I set up and shot this using both an 80 and a 50 mm Zeiss lens on a Hasselblad 553ELX - I think this is from the 50, not sure - I would have to look at the negs. It looks like the 50 from the curve of the stove edge. The 50 on this medium format size is so wide it's almost like a fish eye on a 35mm camera. I chose the most symmetrical one (of 12) to print. It was difficult to get the best placement of the camera to make everything look reasonably square. Ilford ASA 25 black and white negative film scanned as a transparency on a Scitex EverSmart Pro scanner 400 dpi at 400 percent of the original 2.25 x 2.25. I wish I could upload the original so the detail of the ant on the top could be seen, but it's sixty megabytes. I focused on the clock and the depth of field is minimal as the lens was wide open. I used the slowest film I could find so I could open the lens for the d.o.f. and still have the shutter open long enough to see the wind blowing the trees in the background. I had to use a cord release. It was a sunny day early afternoon under the trees. The road edge is just outside of the foreground frame. I made a film at 175 lpi eliptical dot screen plotted on a Scitex Lotem at 2540 dpi and made seven contact prints on Velox style high contrast print paper. Signed, numbered and framed. I still have the original film and am considering another run. The outside of the print is 20 x 24 inches and the image is about 14 inches square. The white edge was 3 inches on the top and the two sides and the bottom white edge was 7 inches. I signed the lower right corner just under the image and put the print number ( x / 7 ) in the left bottom corner. To date this is my magnum opus!
