CO2 ELF Surfaces

Carbon dioxide (O=C=O) Savin electron localization function (ELF) surfaces (isovalue = 0.8). Firefly 8.2.0 DFT B3LYP 6-311++G(d,p), energy minimum. Total energy = -188.6469 Hartrees. Gabedit 2.4.8 visualization. C=O bond distance = 1.16 Å. CO2 has D∞h point group symmetry.

The C=O bonds in CO2 are polarized due to oxygen being the more electronegative atom and attracting electron density towards them, with a partial negative charge on oxygen and partial positive charge on its electrophilic carbon atom. However, there is no overall dipole.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an atmospheric pollutant, contributing to global warming and a mildly electrophilic acidic oxide, increasing acidity in oceans by forming carbonic acid (CO2(aq) + H2O(l) → H2CO3(aq); reversible equation). Rainwater has a pH of ~5.6 and surface seawater has decreased in pH by ~0.1 (now ~8.07). There are global efforts to reduce its formation and presence from combustion of fossil fuels and deforestation.
