Self Portrait 19 of 52

52 Week Self Portrait Project - Week 19 - “Dead Ends” The worst part about them is they leave you feeling lost. You’ve been driving, listening to your favorite Ipod playlist, following your GPS’s directions, when suddenly you’re out in the middle of no-where looking at a dead end. So what do you do? FREAK OUT?! LOOSE CONTROL?! No. The only thing that’s going to accomplish is making you feel more anxious. Stop, evaluate your surroundings, turn around, and head in another direction.

Now, apply this to a situation you may be facing. Is the “dead end” you ran into purposeful? Is there some way you could have avoided it? Were you paying attention? Is it worth taking a second to stop and make sure your “maps” are up to date? Can you learn from it?

Whatever you do, be actionable. Sitting stand-still at a dead end will only waste your time and make you late for wherever you were going.

You have no idea where you were going? Well that’s your fault. There are all sorts of maps and directions available to you, why weren’t you using them? Were you just out, driving around aimlessly, wasting gas, and going no-where?

Most dead ends have warnings before you reach them. Were you paying attention to the road, or fiddling with your Ipod?

Ok, I’ll lay off the metaphors for a second.. Most self-portraits I shoot have a purpose. This one probably being the most purposeful of them all. “Dead ends” are my metaphor for negative situations you may be facing that seem like they came out of no-where. I experienced one late last year, and feel like I’ve only recently pulled back out on the highway and began to drive again. If truth were told, I probably sat at my dead end for way too long before turning around and driving in the other direction. Life is life though, and there’s no changing the past, just the future. One important thing you can learn from dead ends is to make better decisions and always try to stay one step ahead of your immediate destination. Plan forward. If it looks like you may be driving down the wrong road, check your maps again. Look for warning signs. Pay attention.

Dead ends will inevitably happen, no matter how much you try and avoid them. The thought to leave with here is, once you run into one, your vehicle only stops as long as you let it.
