Spinning Ice Circle
As I wildlife photographer based in Somerset, the recent cold snap and snow was a welcome opportunity to observe the wildlife in very different circumstances. However, while walking along the River Isle on Friday 2th March 2018 near my home, I came across the most unusual sight of a slowing spinning Ice circle in the middle of the river. Anything in a river is normally swept downstream with the natural flow but this was so different in that it was slowly spinning round and round without moving. Almost mesmerising and fascinating to watch on a bitterly cold morning. Probably formed by a combination of water flow & eddy currents and the build up of ice from the banks.
Spinning Ice Circles are normally found in the cold climates, of North America and Northern Europe, so to find one in Somerset is a bit unusual if not unique. But that is a good indicator of just how harsh the recent cold weather really was. They have been seen up to 50ft but the River Isle is somewhat smaller and I guess that this one was a 6-8ft.
I will post a video soon.
