Via dei Volsci

2014 Rome (Quartiere San Lorenzo)

 

“Si aveva l’abitudine nei quartieri popolari di non occuparsi troppo dei governanti, padrona era la libertà: essa non avrebbe mai capitolato”. (Iscrizione sotto la targa Via dei Volsci)

 

Vagando per le strade di San Lorenzo mi sono fermata diverse volte in via dei Volsci, a leggere queste parole di Louise Michel. Molti, romani e non, si chiedono come ci si trovi in quartieri del genere, come si faccia a vivere tranquilli in una zona famosa per la sua movida notturna, per la forte presenza di stranieri, per lo spaccio. Ebbene, credo di non conoscere nessun altro luogo in cui l’idea stessa di “quartiere” sia concepita nella sua totalità, pronunciata con l’orgoglio tipico di chi vi sente forte l’appartenenza. E non solo dai residenti nati a San Lorenzo: questo sentire accomuna chi il quartiere l’ha vissuto fin da piccolo, chi vi abita provvisoriamente, chi per quelle strade ci passa anche distrattamente.

Wandering the streets of San Lorenzo I stopped several times in via dei Volsci, to read these words of Louise Michel. Many, Rome and elsewhere are wondering how you are in neighborhoods like that, as anyone can live peacefully in an area famous for its nightlife, the strong presence of foreigners, for drug dealing. Well, I guess I do not know any other place where the very idea of "neighborhood" is conceived as a whole, he said with the pride of one who will feel a sense of belonging. And not only by residents born in San Lorenzo: this feeling shared by the district who has lived as a child, those who live temporarily, some for those roads we also passes distractedly.
