the famous lissajous curves

so, here is the thing:

if you would like to get some handsome lissajous curves you need two harmonc oscillators with different oscillation frequencyes f_1 and f_2. one will be moving along the axis x the other along axis y.

you can play with frequenyes to adjust the pattern. (for more google lissajous curves)

BUT how do you do that?? (if you know better ways tell me, this is just what came to my mind @ the moment)

for this you might use several methods.

mine was an Y pendulum. this is made by tying a string ( approx. 1-2m) horizontaly making sure it is loose (so the middle part is ~10-20cm below the level of the knots if pulled (shaping a V)).

then you need to tie an other piece of string on the middle of the V making it an Y shape. the length of this part and the height of the V determines the freq. thus the shape of the lightpainting.

now you just need to attach a torch and there you go with your fancy pendulum.

for the other "roundish" images I used a simple pendulum. if you start it so it runs on an ellipse it is gonna make those shapes, cause mathematical pendulums are not perfectly harmonic oscillators, but again, google that ;)

more tk.
