The birth of the first emoticon is very controversial and very complex, then for the curious recommend going to read on wikipedia :))

Curiosity:

According to some, the emoticon is merely a stylized smiley created by Harvey R. Ball very fashionable in the seventies and eighties.

 

There is an earlier case of emoticons ante litteram, in the novel One, No One hundred thousand of Luigi Pirandello (1926), in which you use graphic signs to describe a facial expression.
