Baptized in ice – Svalbard
Travelling is probably my biggest passion alongside with biking and photographing. Not only does it expand my knowledge of other countries but it helps to improve my English skills.
I have been fascinated by the far north since I began exploring the world. I knew that my feet would wander through Northern Norway or Iceland one day. However, I got much further than I had ever thought. I was taken by the northern winds beyond the Arctic Circle to Svalbard. Despite its distance it is surprisingly inexpensive to get there by plane. The return ticket can be purchased for less than 300 Euros and some smarter folks got it even cheaper. Apart from trekking and camping I wanted to capture the stark beauty of the Arctic on black & white film.
My photo bag consisted of the Fujifilm medium format cameras and 14 rolls of Ilford film. I left my Nikon F100 at home as I prefer to work with larger negatives in the darkroom (bathroom). Shooting film in Svalbard was quite easy and the cameras survived the harsh conditions of the Arctic. Svalbard´s weather in late August was similar to that of October/November in the Czech Republic. It was mostly cloudy but superb for shooting black & white film. The rolls of film have been developed /scanned and I am going to start wet printing in the bathroom very soon. I can´t wait to see the results!
