DEFEND GENUINELY AFFORDABLE HOUSING UNDER THREAT - NO TO SOCIAL CLEANSING

Join us on the Haringey Defend Council Housing campaigning stall, 11am 1pm this Saturday, 4 April [2015], outside Coombes Croft Library, High Road, Tottenham, London N17 8AD (opposite the Spurs Ground).

Haringey Defend Council Housing Meeting, 6.30 pm, Thursday 9th April, Cafe Life, 22 Moorefield Road, Tottenham N17 6PY (near Bruce Grove BR Station)

A shocking new Haringey Council report has admitted that The ability of local people to afford the new homes being built, especially in the east of the borough, is dependent on them accessing jobs and also increasing their incomes to a sufficient level. (Equalities Impact Assessment on Haringeys housing policies, Cabinet, 17/03/15, p 62).

It is clear enough that this is a policy of social cleansing, when Tottenham residents are told to get high-flying jobs in new media if they want to buy or rent a home in the area in future, while local training opportunities are being cut, and local trading estates and community jobs are being cleared out under these plans.

It is time to speak out against Haringey's huge programme of council house demolitions and private developments.

This report confirms that Council renting is really-affordable in Haringey, while low cost home ownership and near-market rents are not actually affordable on local average incomes.

So when council housing is demolished, affordable housing is not affordable.

These policies are so divisive. According to this report, the Councils reliance on low-cost home ownership will adversely affect black people in particular.

The Council is still denying the reality of its policies, and their impact on local people. But the truth must come out, and we will be raising the issues with all local candidates in the General Election.

Please join in our campaigning work, to spread the message, and do send in reports and questions from your estate, and your neighbours and friends. Let us put our case: we are most willing to send speakers to your residents association or steering group.
