The bridge that carries the M48 (former M4) across the River Wye near Chepstow. The Severn Bridge is off to the left of the photo.

Pont Gwy is a cable stayed bridge across the Avon Gwy / River Wye, with a complete length of 408 m / 1340 ft. Opened in 1966 as part of the M4 and linked to the Severn Bridge, it was built by the Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company.

Completion in 1996 of a new bridge and approach roads downstream saw this route redesignated as the M48. In 2021 there were suggestions that it could lose motorway status as it did not match modern standards and could not easily be upgraded to do so.
