Manchester Rochdale Canal 080723105511

The Rochdale Canal through central Manchester. This is part of the Cheshire Ring Canals, with a link to the Ashton Canal half a mile ahead beyond the covered section and a meeting with the Bridgewater Canal around a mile behind the camera.

This large brick building is the Manchester Crown Court Minshull Street. The main part of the building was completed in 1871, with extensions and major refurbishments between 1993 and 1996. The name includes the name of the street to distinguish it from the 1962 completed Manchester Crown Court (Crown Square).

The first real proposals for the Rochdale Canal were in 1776, but it was not until 1804 that the works were completed, linking the Bridgewater Canal at Castlefield in Manchester to the Calder Navigation at Sowerby Bridge. After falling traffic the canal became increasingly derelict and a last through passage was probably in 1937.

However, it was not until 1965 that an application was made to formally close the canal, but objections by the Inland Waterways Association instead led to a revival, and the complete waterway was reopened in 2002.
