Miscellaneous photos June and July 2022.
Once a major exporter of copper and coal, Swansea Harbour is now mainly home to pleasure vessels. The multiple tower blocks are mainly 21st century replacements for the dockside equipment that were here from the mid 19th century.
RV (Research Vessel) Mary Anning is moored in Swansea Harbour. The vessel was completed in May 2019 for Swansea University to use for research use. For more details, see www.swansea.ac.uk/bioscience/seacams-2/seacams2-research-...
Mary Anning is regarded as the founder of palaentology, the study of fossils. From an early age she accompanied her father on hunts around her home town in Lyme Regis, Devon, for fossils to sell to tourists. Her discovery of complete skeletons of hitherto unknown creatures led her on a quest for self education to provide answers to the many questions thus raised. Due to her gender especially she was never given serious accreditation for her research, although her background from the 'poor' side of town did not help in an age dominated even more than today by the 'gentleman' culture. Regrettably our present government (2022) is apparently trying to return us to the norms of that era by only providing university study options outside 'marketable' skills to those who have personal means.
